The M88 Hercules is an all weather armored recovery vehicle. It is used to fix or switch out broken parts in vehicles when under fire, in addition to freeing stuck or otherwise stalled vehicles. It has been deployed in such conflicts as the Vietnam War and Operation Iraqi Freedom. A crew of 3 operates the Hercules, which features an M2 .50 caliber heavy machine gun.
The M88 Hercules has been in service since 1961. It was originally manufactured by Bowen McLaughlin York, who eventually merged with FMC Corporation to form United Defense, which was acquired by BAE Systems. Variants of the Hercules are the M88 A1 (1977) and M88 A2 (1991), the variant that gives the Hercules its name. The vehicle has an operational range of 200 miles and can reach a speed of 30 mph.
