M1 ABRAMS
The M1 Abrams is a highly mobile, heavily armored, and well armed tank intended for ground warfare. It has seen action in the First and Second Gulf Wars as well as the War in Afghanistan. The Abrams’ primary armament is the 105 mm L52 M68 rifled cannon, and it also features one .50 caliber M2HB heavy machine gun and two 7.62 mm M240 machine guns. A crew of 4, consisting of a commander, gunner, loader, and driver, operates the vehicle.
The M1 Abrams entered service in 1980 as the replacement of the M60 Patton. It was designed by Chrysler Defense, which is now General Dynamics Land Systems. Variants of the Abrams include the M1 IP (Improved Performance – 1984), M1 A1 (1985), and M1 A2 (1992). The A1 and A2 each boast a 120 mm L44 M256 smoothbore cannon. The Abrams has an operational range of between 300 and 355 miles and can travel at 45 mph (33 mph off-road). It also features armor based on the British-designed Chobham armor, a composite consisting of alloys of steel, ceramics, plastic composites, and Kevlar. The M1 is one of the heaviest main battle tanks currently in service, weighing in at nearly 62 metric tons
